  • Cynthia Uwak (former Nigerian national player and multiple player of the year)
  • Khalida Popal (former captain of the Afghan women's football team, director of the Girl Power Organization in Denmark)
  • Layla Mousa (SPIN network, Uisp)
  • Joaquim Evangelista (President of the SJPF)

  • Moderation: Blanca De la Quintana, FC Barcelona foundation

An online event organised by the Sport Inclusion Network (SPIN) and hosted by SJPF – Sindicato dos Jogadores Profissionais de Futebol.

Background

Female football is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Only recently governing bodies have started to promote female football on various levels. However, there are several challenges. For example, female football across Europe is still not very diverse in terms of ethnic background. Do women from ethnic minority communities have less interest in playing? Or do football structures and clubs as well as families discourage female minority participation? What is needed to include female refugees, migrants, and other discrimination contexts?

This online panel discussion intends to be a space of reflection and exchange, where voices of women in football will be heard. The event will bring sports practitioners perspectives to the fore and debate the work developed by football governing bodies and public authorities and their policies and regulations towards ethnic minority women in football.

These current topics are covered by the latest edition of “W”, the bilingual women’s football magazine of the Portuguese Players Union, which will be launched during the event.

The discussion is part of the Erasmus+ project SPIN Women, where achieving gender equality in sport through participation, empowerment and breaking down barriers is key.
