EDU:PACT launch of Handbook & Interactive Toolkit

EDU:PACT launch of Handbook & Interactive Toolkit

The fairplay Initiative has many years of experience in working with coaches and pedagogues in practical workshop sessions and training seminars on intercultural dialogue, education and empowerment of minorities in sport. As partner of the ERASMUS+ project EDU:PACT we were able to get a deeper insight in the theoretical background of intercultural education and sport and are proud to share the latest products: a Handbook on Intercultural Learning and an Interactive Online Toolkit for physical education teachers and sport coaches.

EDU:PACT Training, Vienna, September 2019

Handbook

The EDU:PACT handbook is combining the expertise of universities and organisations like fairplay, working in the fields of physical education, coaching and intercultural education.

Physical education teachers and coaches are often at the forefront of these diversifying societies, and work with culturally, ethnically, and linguistically heterogeneous groups. Despite this, in the past teachers and coaches have not been well prepared for the task of intercultural education through sport. After nearly three years of work EDU:PACT has taken a significant step towards achieving that goal through the release of the EDU:PACT Handbook.

The EDU:PACT Handbook presents the fundamental thematic and theoretical building blocks for successful intercultural education in sport. As such, its contents can be used flexibly and adapted according to different groups and local needs. The content from the handbook is divided into four distinct units and can be used as the basis for modules or individual courses meant to train physical education teachers or coaches on the different components of intercultural education. A selection of practical activities complements each unit in an interactive and hands-on fashion.

Download the English version of the Handbook here. The Handbook is also available in Danish, German, Greek and Italian.

Interactive Toolkit

While the EDU:PACT Handbook presents the fundamental thematic and theoretical building blocks for successful intercultural education in sport, the EDU:PACT Interactive Toolkit provides more than that. It is also divided into four units, and contains additional material like review quizzes, videos, infographics and surveys. The extras are meant to help you adapt the content to different groups and local needs. Please note that work is still in progress, we will keep updating information throughout the project runtime.

We would also like to share the Intercultural Sensitivity Survey with you, which is supposed to give an idea about your overall intercultural sensitivity, and support your self-understanding within the context of the EDU:PACT Toolkit.

About EDU:PACT

The project “Intercultural Education through Physical Activity, Coaching and Training” (EDU:PACT) adresses the intercultural challenges, which most of the countries in Europe are facing nowadays. The project aims to improve quality of pre-service and in-service education by strengthening the professional profile of both sport related teaching professions preparing teachers and coaches for inclusive intercultural education in and through physical education and sport.

Although in most European counties, (physical and sport) educators teach culturally, ethnically and linguistically heterogeneous classes of pupils (or athletes), teachers and coaches have not been well prepared for this task of intercultural education through sport.

Based on a survey on intercultural learning in formal education (pre-service and continuous professional development of physical education teachers and coaching license education) the aims of the EDU:PACT project are:

  • Development of teaching and learning guidelines, didactical concepts and study units for initial teacher / trainer (coaches) education and continuous professional development towards an inclusive intercultural behavior.

  • This step is followed by a piloting training of expert university staff from all project partner universities in intercultural competence (expert knowledge, methododical competence, personal competence, organisational competence). This training is partly performed by experienced NGOs with comprehensive experience and competence in this area.

  • As a next step each of this newly qualifyied teacher-trainer educators will empower between 20-25 (physical educators – and coaches) who implement their appropriated skills and competences in the practical teaching and coaching of children and adolescents with migrant background together with youth from the hosting community (approximately 2000 children and adolescents trained).

  • Both teaching staff and pupils/athletes will provide feedback, which will be part of the review and validation process. Guidelines, didactical approaches, study units and modules will be reviewed and adapted, ensuring an optimized outcome.
