Youth Summit in Skopje

Youth Summit in Skopje

From December 3 to 5, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) hold the 5th Youth Summit in Skopje, North Macedonia. The region’s keystone youth event promoted democratic unity and strengthened the pro-democracy discourse in the Western Balkans.

Youth had the chance to connect and reconnect, learn from one another and gain greater understanding of political movements and civil society around the world. For the first time in a YIHR Youth Summit sport was included as a possibility and tool to work towards social inclusion, human rights and peace building in post war conflict areas.

In the sesssion “Peacebuilding through sport” we explored how various forms of sports associations and actions can impact the reduction of youth radicalization and prompt local and regional peacebuilding. It presented a platform for exchange of experience and concrete examples of peacebuilding through sports. Among other organisations and initiatives like the FemSlam Football initiative from Belgrade, the feminist and LGBTIQ club Atletik Dildoa from Turkey or the female club representatives of 041 Whtie Angels Zagreb, David Hudelist from fairplay could present the project idea and activities of Football Zajedno.

The participation in the Youth Summit allowed us to gain a deeper insight in the discussions on civil society level on human rights, nationalism and especially the current view on the European Union. We were happy to connect with over 200 like-minded young politicians, human rights professionals and civil society representatives from the region.
